    Waterfalls and Stone Villages

Moderate guided hike in Valchiavenna from the Acquafraggia Waterfalls, a protected natural monument, up to Savogno (932 m), an old stone village with slate roofs, church and communal oven. 500 m of ascent; spring to autumn.

A hike in lower Valchiavenna that combines two of its most evocative landmarks: the famous Acquafraggia Waterfalls, designated a natural monument, and the hamlet of Savogno (932 m). Once permanently inhabited, Savogno still preserves its church, communal oven and stone houses with slate roofs, set in one of the most photogenic landscapes in the valley. We start from the Chiosco Legnone at the Acquafraggia Waterfalls and walk gently up to the base of the falls. From here we take the Sentiero di Pigion, passing through the hamlet of Sant'Abbondio and the characteristic Crotti della Cànoa — a less-travelled alternative to the classic stepped mule track, avoiding its roughly 2,800 stone steps. The trail climbs diagonally through the woods until it joins the historic mule track just below Savogno. Lunch stop in the hamlet — packed lunch, or, if Rifugio Savogno has already reopened for the summer season, with the option of lunch at the refuge (to be booked when you sign up for the hike). Return along the same route, with fresh views of the waterfalls on the final descent.

    Who's it for

Reasonably fit walkers, no alpine experience needed. The route follows well-marked mule tracks and trails. Suitable for children aged 8 and up who have already done hikes of at least 3 hours.
