Valley of Young Explorers
Easy, family-friendly guided hike from San Bernardo into Val Drogo, above San Giacomo Filippo, on a historic stone mule track along the Drogo torrent, past chapels and alpine huts. Perfect for children, spring to autumn.
A gentle, family-friendly hike into the Val Drogo, a hidden side valley above San Giacomo Filippo. The trail follows a beautifully preserved historic mule track along the Drogo torrent — an alpine engineering masterpiece of interlocking stones — through cool conifer woods, with frequent openings onto mountain views.
The valley is perfect for younger hikers: gentle gradient, water running alongside, scattered alpine huts and small chapels to explore along the way. We start from the hydroelectric power station car park in San Bernardo (1,050 m) and walk up the mule track, passing the small chapel of Sant'Antonio (1,200 m) and reaching the hamlet of Drogo, where the valley opens up into pastures and traditional huts. We continue gently towards Caurga (1,280 m), our turning point, before retracing our steps.
Lunch stop at the Agriturismo Dai Camuscin in Drogo (open Fri-Sun, only available for the Saturday date; on Wednesdays the agriturismo is closed and lunch will be packed). The Camuscin is a small family-run mountain restaurant offering local cured meats, cheeses, traditional dishes and homemade desserts, all sourced from the valley itself. Booking is essential and subject to availability — please confirm at sign-up.
Who's it for
A relaxed hike open to anyone who enjoys walking, no alpine experience needed. The route follows a wide, well-paved historic mule track with very gentle gradient. Particularly suitable for families with children aged 6 and up — the valley offers plenty of natural curiosities along the way: streams, small waterfalls, alpine huts, chapels and the chance to spot chamois and marmots.
