Into the Heart of Val Bregaglia
Easy guided hike in the Swiss Val Bregaglia, from Stampa, home village of Alberto Giacometti, to Soglio, Segantini's "threshold of paradise", through chestnut woods with views of Pizzo Badile and Cengalo. Spring to autumn.
A hike across the Italian-Swiss border into the heart of Val Bregaglia, linking two of its most evocative villages: Stampa (994 m), birthplace of the sculptor Alberto Giacometti, and Soglio (1,090 m), the sun-balcony of the valley, famously described by the painter Giovanni Segantini as la soglia del paradiso — "the threshold of paradise".
We start from the centre of Stampa and head up through chestnut woods and old terraces along a section of the historic Via Bregaglia. The trail climbs steadily but gently, opening up onto sweeping views of the Sciora, Cengalo and Badile peaks rising above the Val Bondasca. We pass through tiny hamlets in stone and slate, before emerging on the panoramic terrace of Soglio, with its narrow alleys, the elegant Palazzo Salis and one of the most photographed views in the Alps.
Lunch stop in Soglio: each participant is free to choose in advance between a packed lunch or a meal at one of the village restaurants (please book directly with the restaurant, subject to availability). After lunch and time to wander the village, we return to Stampa by PostBus (line 4, hourly service, about 15 minutes). Tickets are bought online before boarding — we'll do this together as a group at the bus stop, no need to worry about it in advance. From Stampa we drive back together to Prosto.
Who's it for
Reasonably fit walkers, no alpine experience needed. The route follows well-marked mule tracks and trails. Suitable for children aged 8 and up who have already done hikes of at least 3 hours.
Meeting point
Church car park in Prosto di Piuro (SO) — we then drive together to Stampa (about 25 minutes, car-pooling)
